Saturday, September 6 - dried out tomatoes, juicy watermelons

The tomato vines are practically bare and drying up - yesterday we spent time carefully untying the strings and pulling up the tobacco stakes to be saved for next year.  We also put straw around the five rows of seedlings in the winter garden...kale, radishes, lettuce, arugula... I probably looked about as lively as one of the tomato plants by the end of the strawing in the 90 degree heat!  Still plenty to harvest - green peppers and eggplant, as well as a number of watermelons.  The kids and I made some delicious watermelon sorbet today!
