Bees on their way

Last winter, we sadly lost all the bees in the two hives at the garden, and the same thing happened to the two hives at the Plummer House in early spring.  With most commercial suppliers of new bees in the area already sold out for 2018, it looked like our garden was going to have to rely on wild bees and other insects for pollination services this year.  However, thanks to a late-breaking special arrangement between Mom's Organic Market and Richland Honey Bees (see link below), we will soon become proud parents to a new queen and nucleus hive!  On Saturday June 2nd, we will pick up the hive, which will come in a box with 5 frames, and bring it to the garden. Below is a photo of what it will likely look like. Very exciting! And if we have enough nectar-producing flowers in the area, we may even get some honey the first year.
