Saturday May 14 - okra, beans and cow peas are in the ground

Wahoo, we got all 5 rows of okra, beans and cow peas in the ground and irrigation lines down before the big storms hit!  First we added compost, fertilizer and lime to the rows, then Lloyd tilled with the tractor to mix it all in, then we planted the seeds, being careful not to put the seeds too deeply. Only three times the diameter of the seed...that's not very deep!

We planted Alabama Red and Clemson Spineless okra, and four kinds of beans - purple, romano, french bush, and Kentucky wonder - and a row of cow peas.  Why cow peas?  It's a tribute to the history of the farm, where cow peas would have been a common crop, having come to the US from Africa during the slave trade in the 17th to early 19th century. It has an amazing diversity of uses around the world...check it out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowpea.
