Saturday July 5 - aliens in the squash field

I couldn't help it...the little squash starting to grow looked just like heads.  And a rutabaga so big it warranted it's own photography session.  Elsewhere in the garden, the hot colors of summer are starting to pop:  red sunflowers, ripening pink blackberries and orange tomatoes, and a yellow butterfly on a zinnia.

We strawed the two new bean rows, pulled up irrigation lines in the rows already harvested, experimented with wood ash around the squash to keep the moths at bay, and weeded - a hot day in the garden - lunch down by the river was a wonderful respite.
